At this time, the most effective mental health approach confirmed by science deals in behavior and concrete/measurable activities. Use SMART* goals and no achievement is too small.

If a person is suffering with mental health issues, there is quite a lot they can do with their time and behavior to impact their symptoms. Some are even small and easy.

The notion of changing behavior to change mental health may be the simple fix. For some it won’t be the whole answer. If it were that easy, they might not need help at all. Regardless, enriching habits are required to sustain recovery from depression.

What we do in the physical world is key to mental health recovery. It is crucial that a healthy lifestyle is sustained in recovery. One cannot self-isolate, put in minimal effort toward personal goals, spend most of the day engaged in detrimental activities and find that they are satisfied and happy in life.

Most of us have experienced how doing something can lead to a change in emotions…

What if I am not in the mood for dancing? …but someone keeps pestering me and just to get them off my back, I give in and dance for a few minutes? Do I enjoy myself and forget about the mood I was in?

A behavioral health approach may require little to no intellectual buy-in to be effective. We all know people who were leveraged into treatment and after being sober for a few weeks become happier and excited about recovery.

*SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-based
